Gerard Khaw was told by doctors five years ago that he only had a small chance of surviving nose cancer. When the cancer spread to his liver three years later, doctors removed 60% of his liver that had tumours. Khaw, a Penangite, survived the ordeal and has written a book entitled Road to Beautiful: A Journey of Hope detailing his journey of battling the disease. While going through cancer treatment, he even pursued an off-campus Masters in Business Administration programme from the University of South Australia in 2009 and completed it in March 2011. Gerard said even though the odds were stacked against him, he managed to stand tall by the grace of God.
"I also received full support from my wife Glory, my two children Isabelle, 10, Jeanelle, nine, and friends," he said at the launching of his book. Khaw said he was diagnosed with stage three nose cancer and went through radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatments. I lost my appetite and my weight dropped from 90kg to 70kg. Doctors told me that I only had a 10% chance of survival. "It is important that cancer patients look at the positive side of things and never lose hope and faith," he said.
