Laying the Foundations
Restore to me the joy of your salvation - Psalm 51:12
“We built this city on rock and roll” was Starship’s cry as they lamented the closure of Los Angeles’ live music clubs in the 1980s. They feared that the vibrant musicality of the city was quickly becoming replaced by soul-less corporations.
Whatever you think of the merits of the song (dubbed the ‘worst song of all time’ by some popular magazines!) it demonstrates the powerful bond we have with the foundations of a place. The foundations shape our identity.

At Waverley Abbey our foundations date back to 688AD when King Caedwalla gave the land to local monks to become a site of dedication and prayer. Since those early beginnings, the Waverley Abbey site has been stewarded by Cistercian monks, a long line of Christian families (including Florence Nightingale’s) and now Christian organisations. As the ruins of Waverley Abbey
remain at our headquarters, we are often reminded of our foundations, reflecting on the centuries of prayer that have supported this place.
On a personal level, when we think about our salvation, we connect back the joyful foundations of our faith. In this edition of Every Day With Jesus, Amy Boucher Pye helps us do that, guiding us through ways to spend time in scripture every day.
Amy Boucher Pye is a distinguished Christian author who has written and produced books, small group sessions and podcasts to guide others in their faith.
We hope you find her wisdom illuminating in this edition, and find restoration in the joy of salvation.
Every blessing
