Description
Herein is Love is a five-volume series of Bible commentaries for parents to read to their children. They provide what children need most—solid truths to grow in. In these books, Nancy Ganz draws out the beautiful implications of the Old Testament narrative that are foundational for Christian faith.

The beginning books of the Bible are essential to our understanding of God’s redemptive story. The Herein is Love series creatively focuses our attention on the events that bring this story to life, combining the richness of literature and the depth of a commentary.

Exodus is the second book in The Gospel According to Moses, which continues the blessed proclamation of God’s great Love and mercy and salvation for His people. The Lord of Love, “the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort” (II Corinthians 1: 3), does not suddenly appear in the New Testament as some new god. No, the one and only God, who is the same yesterday, today and forever, was there from the beginning; He was there before the beginning, and He continues the revelation of Himself and His great Love in Exodus.

In this book we see God raising up Moses as a deliverer for His people. In this Moses was a type of Christ, foreshadowing the Messiah, who would save His people from their sins and rescue them from the dominion of Satan, the power of death and the agony of hell. God’s great deliverance in Exodus, which undoubtedly displays God’s Love for His people, nonetheless points beyond itself to a greater deliverance in Jesus Christ. In Exodus we also see the mercy of God in establishing Moses as the mediator between Himself and the people. In this Moses was again a type of Christ, foreshadowing the “one mediator between God and man, the man Christ Jesus” (I Timothy 2: 5). Moses, mediator of the Old Covenant in Exodus, points to Jesus, the Son of God, “the mediator of the New Covenant ... the mediator of a better covenant, which is established upon better promises” (Hebrews 9: 15;8: 6).

In Exodus we also see God’s Love in appointing a high priest to represent the people and by establishing the entire system of sacrificial worship by which the people might receive cleansing from their sins, but the ministry of Aaron pointed to the future, to a greater High Priest, a greater sacrifice, and the demonstration of a greater Love. “Herein is Love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins” (I John 4: 10).

Through the entire book of Exodus we see the Love of God shining forth in splendour. We see it in the burning bush, as God calls Moses to rescue His people; we see it in the wilderness in the pillar of fire, as God leads His people on their journey; we see it on the top of Mount Sinai, as God gives His people the Ten Commandments; we see it within the tabernacle, as God condescends to dwell in the midst of His people. In Exodus God’s Love is demonstrated again and again for His people— as He rescues them from Egypt, as He baptizes them in the Red Sea, as He provides for them in the wilderness bread from heaven and water from the rock, as He bestows upon them His holy Law, as He establishes His covenant with them, as He sets up His tabernacle among them. Exodus is filled with the Love of God for us, and so for us it is a book which fills us with hope and faith and joy in the Lord. It is a book which fills us with praise for our God.
